Shalhevet Cohen and her family returned from a holiday dinner in Ashkelon to attend a community evening in Zikim. The next day, when they heard the Red Alert, they locked themselves in the safe room, realizing that this time it was "something different." In the WhatsApp groups, they read messages from the emergency squad about an incident in the coastal area; "terrorists" were mentioned, but they were noted to be outside the kibbutz. At 14:00, the electricity and the internet went out. "The brain tries to protect itself and not understand that you are in danger. It understands, and yet it does not understand." They were ready to leave the kibbutz; the suitcases were packed, but they were not allowed to leave. In the evening, they were rescued by convoys of vehicles from the Ministry of Defense, with the children crammed into an armored car. Only in retrospect did Shalhevet realize that they were saved by a miracle, thanks to the vigilance of many parties - the Navy and the standby unit, which functioned in an exemplary manner. "We are thankful to be alive."
