The Full Testimony

Testimony of

May Caspi

Mai had been an intensive care combat medic in the Gaza Division. She finished her army service a month before the incident. But nothing she had learned in the army prepared her for the day when she had to run to the kibbutz office under a barrage of gunfire. With virtually no equipment, she treated the wounded who arrived, one after the other. The building they were in was exposed. They were unable to defend themselves. Every time that Mai felt that she couldn’t take any more, that her body and soul were stretched to the limit, another wounded person arrived, another dead body. And still the fighting continued. Sunday morning, she was already at her parents' house with her little brother and mother. For a moment, it seemed that the whole situation was going to end. Then she received a message that there had been another terrorist infiltration. She took her father's gun out of the safe, even though she had never used a gun. She realized that now she was alone, fighting for her life, for her mother's life and her little brother's life. No one was coming to save them. They only had her.
